Responding to Older Adults with Mental Health and Addiction Problems

A Guide for Supervisors, Clinical and Support Staff

2nd edition—formerly Improving Our Response to Older Adults with Substance Use, Mental Health and Gambling Problems

Edited by Jonathan Bertram, Tarek K. Rajji and Marilyn White-Campbell

Format: Paperback

Mental health, substance use and gambling problems often go unrecognized and untreated in older adults. Service providers can help older adults get the care they need by learning to identify and manage these problems and make referrals for specialized support.

In this guide, professional, clinical and administrative staff in agencies and facilities serving older adults will find information and strategies to increase their skill, comfort and confidence in working with older adults who may have mental health and addiction problems. With contributions from more than 30 experts, this guide provides:

  • skills and tools to help identify substance use, mental health and gambling problems in older adults
  • tips on where to find treatment and how to access help
  • ways to provide care and support over the long term
  • advice on how to address complex situations such as isolation, dementia and driving, hoarding and more.

This guide can be used as a training resource in college courses or in workshops. Faculty of personal support and health care aide programs can use it with students. Administrators and supervisors of services for older adults can order it for their staff.
